Sewing Course
In January 2005 we started a machine-sewing course and a crochet course, enabling the women to learn other sewing techniques along with the techniques, which they were already familiar. The intention is to improve their economic situations thus rendering them more autonomous. That year, in view of the scarce economic resources, the Committee was able to buy only two sewing machines that were enthusiastically received but were used for only a few months before the strong flooding; caused by hurricane Stan carried them away.

In January 2007, the “San Marcos La Laguna Cultural Project”, coordinated by Onlus “Liberamente”, has enabled us to organize a new sewing machine course by buying 7 sewing machines. The Project will have a duration of two years and has the aim of running courses of different levels, giving the women, in the end, the means necessary for continuing, if they want, independently or to cooperate with the Committee in order to support other activities. The finished products will be exposed for sale in the “Tienda Luna Kakchiquel” and we hope to be able to introduce them soon into the Fair Trade circuit in Italy and Guatemala. This will allow the Committee and the women involved to receive a fair profit for their work.
